District Art Fair Begins on Friday
Students from throughout the District will have their art work on display at Piccadilly Mall in Salmon Arm from February 7-14, 2025, as part of the annual K̓wsaltktnéws ne Secwepemcúl’ecw SD83 Elementary District Art Fair. We invite you to come to the mall to check out all of the wonderful student art work!
Both 2-D and 3-D student created art pieces will be on display throughout the mall, creating an exciting art event that families and seniors eagerly anticipate.
This year’s fair is a few weeks earlier, as the art fair is typically in March. Art Fair organizers Corrinne Langston and Kirsten Mazur, school principals at Ranchero and Grindrod, hope the earlier date will be easier for artisans and teachers alike! “We’ll try these dates this year for and then reassess,” commented Langston.
One special day is February 12, 2025, when a group of students from each participating school will have an opportunity to work with local artists, Knowledge Keepers, an Indigenous helping teacher, career teacher, and retired teachers. These workshops offer students a chance to explore the possibility of pursuing arts as a career, while learning about different cultures, artistic styles, and techniques. High school student volunteers assist in the workshops, gaining valuable experience working with younger students.
They will get to try their hands at loom beading with Diane Jewell, Japanese calligraphy with Eiko Ukehara, portrait drawing with Terry Greenhough, block prints with Christine Kashuba, pottery with Catherine Auten, pottery with Stephen Plant, wood project with George Richard, lanterns with Tina Lepine, cross-stitching with Judy Surkon, and Monster Headbands with Melissa Nasby.
This event is a celebration of the amazing student art and the enriching educational opportunities available in SD83.
